The blue future - Horizon 2020 project Space@Sea

The majority of the world’s population lives in coastal areas where space has always been a commodity. In the near future, the waterfront may reclaim or change the utilisation of large parts of existing land space as sea levels rise due to global warming. At the same time, the number of activities at sea will increase, leading to a demand for suitable locations for combined activities such as harbours, residential use, food production, energy generation and storage. Both developments call for the need for affordable and flexible space at sea for both coastal and further offshore use. Additionally, increased environmental awareness requires that the solution should be sustainable with minimum environmental impact. Floating modular solutions have a limited environmental impact and offer an affordable and flexible solution to the increasing shortage of space along the world's coastlines.
