Manoeuvring Large Ships in Shallow Water-II

AuthorsHooft, J.P.

This paper is a sequel to the author's paper under the same title published in the April issue of the Journal. Please see it here.

The first part of this paper dealt with the influence of water depth on the hydrodynamic characteristics of a ship. Another aspect of navigation in shallow water is the presence of such disturbing factors as variable depth, currents, seiches etc. which have to be counteracted immediately since there is usually only limited sea room; in deep water a filtering technique1 is often adopted to avoid continuous rudder action for each disturbing force generated by waves or wind.
