Hydrodynamic advice of Sailing Yachts through Seakeeping Study

AuthorsGaillarde, G., Ridder, E.-J. de, Walree, F. van., Koning, J.
Conference/Journal18th Chesapeake Sailing Yacht Symposium, Annapolis, Maryland, USA
Date1 Mar 2007

The paper presents the different techniques to study seakeeping behavior and performance of sailing yachts. Such techniques involve both numerical and experimental work. On the experimental side, free sailing tests were conducted in oblique seas with a model of a 52 m schooner in the new Seakeeping and Maneuvering Basin of MARIN. The present paper intends to open further potential ways to improve global performance of sailing yachts, by looking at the behavior in unsteady conditions.
