Hurricanes Ivan, Katrina and Rita in the Gulf of Mexico confirmed the importance of extreme waves for all types of offshore structures. They can lead to damage as a result of airgap problems, green water on the deck or slamming to the hull. Therefore, MARIN focused its research on extreme waves through model tests, offshore measurements and numerical simulations.
