Webinar open-source semi-submersible Floating Offshore Wind Turbine design

Since 2022, MARIN has been working on the design and testing of a generic open-source semi-submersible floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) floater. This floater is intended for co-operative research together with the industry into the design challenges and methodologies for industrial scale FOWT platforms. The MARIN platform is a three-column semi-submersible, supporting a 22MW turbine, with the turbine installed on one of the outer columns.

We will now present the work that we did in the past years during a 2-hour webinar, covering three main topics:

Design screening and optimization methodology
We set up a parametrized numerical model of the floater and performed over 1,000 diffraction calculations to find a suitable design. We will discuss the assumptions that we made, how we performed the screening simulations, lessons into the design drivers, and we will show verifications of the design.

Basin tests using Software-in-the-Loop
Basin tests on the design are carried out in the MARIN Concept Basin. We will discuss the basin set-up and how Software-in-the-Loop has been applied, and we will show the first results

How to use the data
The reports and basin test data will be shared after the seminar. We will show the different types of data available and explain how you can use this data for your own research.
