VESSEL OWNERS JOIN FORCES TO SET STANDARDS FOR SEA TRIALS
The analysis of shipbuilders’ speed trials usually requires the use of several corrections to allow for deviations between the conditions during the trial and the conditions defined in the shipbuilding contract. Recent adverse experience of several ship owners suggests that it is time to look again at these corrections, as some have not been revised since they were developed 30 or 40 years ago. For this reason a group of leading ship owners has initiated the Sea Trial Analysis JIP.
Scope
The JIP STA is aiming at the establishment of transparent and accurate methods for the speed/power tests of ships upon delivery. A rational review of the trials analysis procedures will be conducted within the framework of the new ISO Standard 15016. The scope of the first phase of this project, which will be conducted by Marin’s Trials & Monitoring group, comprises the following tasks:
1. Case study to investigate results of trials with various analysis methods
2. Develop recommended practice for trial procedure and measurements
3. Develop ship-type specific methods for sea trial analysis
4. Develop software for on-line analysis
